They say a dream lasts just a little more than a moment but in that moment a person may suffer, rejoice, live or relive their experiences. This project represents a voyage through the dream, a dream which begins inside a mirror and concludes in another mirror.
It describes an exploration of our own spirituality and our own being through four sequences: the Passage, the Voyage, the Revelations and the Return.

A dream is a symbolic phenomenon thus every image in this project is like a clue that leads to the realization of this inner journey.

It is a dream made of images, where we can create our own voyage, which is perhaps the longest journey we might ever take.

Technical Note: All motion and deformation effects are obtained during the shotting

''This Greece story is moving and in a contemporary light, actually transcends that which is Hellenistic. Let these be the new gods and heroes for it all belongs to the raw and the sublime.''

Ancient Greek society was one where men made things happen, women were idealized and its regions were rich due to the multitude of cultures; Sparta, Macedonia, Athens to name but a few. Today we still tell our children about their myths and legends where updated versions of Herodotus’ records are readily available in our DVD stores and few of us function without Pythagoras or Euclid’s help in our everyday lives. Now modern Greece is in a very public turmoil. Unemployment is rife, accusations of corruption are an everyday occurrence and the gap between the rich and poor strikes deep into the heart of the everyday citizens who can barely afford to feed their families. The sight of men and women going through dumpsters, searching for food and begging at traffic lights are sadly not uncommon. But what of art and the beauty that comes from Greece? Has this glorious culture been lost?

To see Greece now, in its very obvious trouble brings to mind a society the ancients might well have inhabited. For this is a place where our European counterparts’ moral judgement is akin to the chorus of elders in a tragedy or even a drawn out black comedy, standing in the corner, they narrate what the outside is thinking; looking in on a very specific set of activities which describe the depths of human emotion and experience. It is not surprising either, that such representations of life and ineffable beauty are in fact so gentle that the chorus moves to woo. This is a place where the new faces of Sparta and Athens sit opposite each other; the fabric of old is draped over younger bodies wearing traditional textures and man’s naked beauty is displayed. Herein, the stuff of new myths and legends begins.

Whether caught in the smoothness of flesh of marble upon the face of Aphrodite or Apollo or in the breeze of skirted thigh off duty, in movement, there is an undeniable masculinity to Greece. It holds the bravado of the Spartans and diplomacy of Athenians. It maps the strategies of Macedonia and all its descendents and the cheek of imperial power, even as far as northern Africa. These images of today’s Greece, its church, the orthodoxy of society structure and the language that has maintained shape and form holds up new ideas in the same way records are established and broken by Olympians; today’s Olympians and it feels strong.

There is a breath and a whisper in each image that captures that sense of the past in all its softness as well as today’s strength, today’s hope and today’s energy. This Greece story is moving and in a contemporary light, it actually transcends that which is Hellenistic.

There is undeniable power and a different story is told from each angle with which it is viewed and in each reflection caught. The spirit that rises up above the white walls and from the stone columns sends out new messages and unashamedly retells old stories. The stories of what the human race has always owned.

These images demand attention without politics but let us remember that they are only as beautiful in the backdrop of such a dramatic social issue as they ultimately belong to the raw and the sublime. Let these be the new gods and heroes; it is beauty and human beauty is never something to be negotiated, only recorded and worshipped and in this worshipful state, we receive our opiate and are free. Hail O’ Hail Liberty!

Dreamt Memories from Africa – William Ropp

William Ropps show ‘Dreamt Memories from Africa’ will open at the Stenersenmuseum in Oslo on September 8th.

William Ropp lives and works in Nancy, France. His photographs have been exhibited extensively in museums and galleries around the world, and his work has been published in several books including one devoted to the Children series, as well a twenty-year retrospective, and the recently published ’Dreamt memories from Africa‘

“… One sees little innocence in Ropp’s vision of the child; the experience is already there and in place. In fact, some of Ropp’s children, at least to my eye, even seem to have the memory of the Holocaust about them – somehow in their dress and in their faces. But possibly I am only seeing one of my own obsessions reflected in Ropp’s mirror. His new work – his children of Mali, his African dream – might seem to present a social message, be a document of life in the third world, or present a vision as chilling as the fantasized terrors of Arbus, Tress, or Lux, but even his dream of Africa is a part of his larger collective dream of the child. Ropp told me that Mali was ‘hell’, and I am quite certain these children lack all the material luxuries of the West. But look at them. They are swimming, playing, fishing, doing all those things children do. Samuel Johnson in his novel Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia has the philosopher Imlac explain to Rasselas that ‘The Europeans’ are less unhappy than we, but they are not happy. Human life is every where a state in which much is to be endured, and little to be enjoyed.- Does the fact that their eyes glow so fiercely mean anything other than that they are inquisitive and as interested as any other child might be in this French photographer who had travelled so far to photograph them? Ropp’s vision is that of the eternal child wherever he or she might be. In the shaping of that vision and in the crafting of his art, he did something that had not been done before – he captured the collective portrait of us all when we were young -” Text by John Wood.

William Ropp will be present at the official opening, sceduled to 6 pm on Thursday September 8th.

The exhibition is curated by Selene Wendt and lasts till October 30th 2011.

Som eneste vertsinstitusjon i Norge viser Preus museum den fotohistorisk viktige utstillingen

New Topographics

Utstillingen åpner søndag 10. april kl. 14.00

Utstillingen New Topographics, Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape ble opprinnelig satt sammen i 1975 med William Jenkins ved George Eastman House i Rochester, New York, som kurator. I 2009 ble utstillingen rekonstruert av Britt Salvesen, den gang direktør og kurator ved Center for Creative Photography i Tucson, ~~nå kurator~~ ~~ved Los Angeles County Museum of Art,~~ og Alison Nordström, kurator ved George Eastman House i Rochester, som et samarbeid mellom de to institusjonene. Utstillingen turnerer i Europa og USA, og består i stor grad av de opprinnelige originalene.

I forbindelse med utstillingen arrangeres det også en egen konferanse påfølgende mandag 11. april, kl 10-17; New Topographics – Then and Now. Konferansen er støttet av Fritt Ord, og holdes på Gamlehorten Gjestegård og i Preus museum. Begge kuratorene vil være tilstede ved åpningen søndag og bidra på konferansen mandag.

Gruppeutstillingen omfatter arbeider av ti fotografer som var unge på 1970-tallet og som nå regnes blant fotografiets mestere: Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd og Hilla Becher, Joe Deal, Frank Gohlke, Nicholas Nixon, John Schott, Stephen Shore og Henry Wessel. Til sammen består utstillingen av rundt 140 fotografier, der alle bortsett fra Stephen Shores fotografier er svart-hvitt. Arbeidene presenteres i serier på mellom 4 til 34 representative fotografier. Bortsett fra den tyske kunstnerduoen Bernd og Hilla Becher, er fotografene amerikanske, og alle opptakene er gjort i USA.

Preus museum har tidligere presentert Robert Adams og har bilder av Lewis Baltz, Bernd og Hilla Becher og Stephen Shore i samlingen. Utstillingen er således en naturlig fortsettelse av museets politikk og ønske om å vise at norsk fotohistorie er en naturlig del av den internasjonale.

I dag regnes New Topographics utstillingen ikke bare som et av de viktige milepælene i fotografiens historie, den har også blitt stående som betegnelsen på en stilretning innenfor et moderne landskaps fotografi. I stedet for å fokusere på det uberørte landskapet slik f.eks. Ansel Adams så den Amerikanske Vesten, brøt de unge fotografene med det tradisjonelle landskaps fotografiet og fokuserte på det hverdagslige og menneskeskapte landskapet. Samtidig søkte man å utnytte jevnt lys og utsnitt som ga inntrykk av et objektivt blikk.

Den nye måten å skildre landskapet på var ikke begrenset til USA. Også i Europa og spesielt i Norge, der landskapet som motiv tradisjonelt har stått sterkt, fornyet fotografene det norske landskapet utover på 1970-80-tallet. Med klar avstandtagen til det som hadde manifestert seg som den ”riktige” norske landskapsskildringen, turistpostkortene og Knud Knudsens storslagene fjorder og fjell på 1800-tallet, valgte fotografene å rette kamera mot kontrastene mellom natur og sivilisasjon. Uavhengig av nasjonalitet, det ble kulturlandskapet langs motorveiene, dyrket mark og beite, ødemark og grenseområder, stier, veier og torg, boliger og næringseiendommer, industri og urbane komplekser formet av historien eller under bygging som heretter vekket interesse. Alle blandes de her på utstillingen, og skaper et upretensiøst panorama av en gjennomsnittlig, helt hverdagslig tid. Omgivelsene er påvirket av eller skapt av mennesker, men menneskene vises ikke fysisk i fotografiene, eller de dukker bare tilfeldigvis opp foran kameraet. Folks liv, deres ulike aktiviteter, skiftende forventninger og muligheter, kulturelle verdier, men også kritiske spørsmål blir formidlet bare indirekte i fotografiene, tilsynelatende uten forsøk på tolkning.

Britt Salvesen og Alison Nordström har stått for tekstene i en ny publikasjon som følger utstillingen:

New Topographics, utgitt av Center for Creative Photography, University of Arizona, George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film og Steidl Forlag, 2009.

Hun er psykolog og tjener 5000 kroner i måneden

Husleie, elektrisitet og gass koster 3000 i måneden.

Ingen av dem går til lege. Leger koster mye, og de vil ikke gi kvittering.

Hadde de gitt kvittering, hadde de måttet oppgitt alt de tjente til skattemyndighetene. Legene.

Den beste jobben er å være politiker. De bevilger god betaling til seg selv.

Mange sier de vil dø.

Heller det enn å vinne i lotto.

Det er større sjanse for å få det godt i døden enn å vinne i lotto.

Alle spiller lotto.

Alle drikker øl.

Fordriver livet mens de venter på å dø.

En ung gutt sier han digger Varg Vikenes.

Av alle skandinaver, har han kun hørt om denne mannen.

Han studerer til å bli ingeniør. Tror han vil slutte. Det er ikke noe vits.

Bedre å gi opp.

Dyrke hat og satan og den kollektive ideen om at ingenting nytter.

Thanks to Pair-a-Dice for giving me a chance to explore the 60's! I had never met the model before, and never been to the location...

hopefully, the photos show, that neither factors mattered, as the model turned out to be quite expressive, and the location worked out nicely.

Herdis Maria Siegert oppfordrer til engasjement mot oljeboringen i nord for å bidra til å sikre at kommende generasjoner også kan få oppleve alle de særegne kvalitetene som landsdelen innehar.

Herdis Maria Siegert - som bor og arbeider på Verdens Ende, Tjøme - har siden 1974 hatt 27 arbeidsreiser til Lofoten. Oppholdene har gitt henne en sterk tilknytning til landsdelen og bilder herfra har utgjort en vesentlig del av hennes kunstneriske virksomhet som utstillinger, illustrasjoner av bøker og tidsskrifter.

Landskapet, lyset, fisket, folket, fuglelivet og faunaen gir inspirasjon og samtidig en ro som hun ikke finner noe annet sted.

Hun har hatt flere separatutstillinger og deltatt på en rekke utstillinger i inn- og utland. Bildene hennes er bl. a. innkjøpt av Norsk Kulturråd og flere offentlige og private instanser. De er representert i flere samlinger og museer bl. a. i Nasjonalmuseet for Kunst, Arkitektur og Design. Hun mottok ”Fotografiprisen” i Norge i 2003 og ble i 2004 utnevnt til ”Hasselblad Master” av Hasselblad som hvert år velger 12 fotografer til Mastere fra hele verden.

Utrolig gøy å jobbe sammen med noen som er så inspirerende og kreativ.
